Breedplan is a modern genetic evaluation system for beef cattle breeders. It originates from Australia, with clients worldwide.
Breedplan offers bull breeders the potential to accelerate genetic progress in their herds and to provide objective information on stock they sell to commercial breeders.
Breedplan is fully integrated with the Cattle Societies Pedigree Systems. It is the best prediction of an animal’s genetics that modern technology can provide. The genetic evaluation system is based on Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) technology to produce Estimated Breeding Values (EBV’s) of recorded cattle for a range of important production traits. The important EBV’s to look out for are birth weight, calving interval, calving ease – maternal / daughters, calving ease – direct, scrotal circumference, 200 day mill, and 200 day growth.
The Upsall herd has been recording with Breedplan for some twenty plus years and as a result most of the female heifers are in the top 10% for growth and our Glenisla Zetor sired bulls are in the top 1%.
By introducing exciting bloodlines from Australia with Broughton Park Thunder. He offers a balanced EBV’s for carcase, growth and calving with ease. In 2007 he was ranked number 1 in the breed for domestic indexes and 2nd in the breed in Australia for external maternal calves. A son, Dingo was retained as a stock bull and still with Upsall today.
The Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society have introduced the Self Replacing Index (SRI), which evaluates the maternal traits. The EBV emphasis is on the sire traits, however to make fast, reliable and more predictable genetic gain in maternal traits, commercial producers should consider widely used bulls, with the right balance of EBV’s, with high Accuracy Values.
